Artist bio: Sylvia Lizarraga

I grew up in Eagle Rock, Los Angeles as a young artist always ditching class to draw, also staying in my art class through lunch break. I have always wanted to perfect seeing every single attribute in an object rather than seeing it as a whole. This helps me learn to change my visual perception of every object I subconsciously dissect, and study. Understanding the compilation of attributes in any object will always be a habit of mine. I try to add a bit of realism in my paintings, and dimension from practicing this technique. For example, staring at the dew on a flower as it catches the light. Or the gleam in someones eyes while listening to them talk. I even catch myself at times looking at the lines in marble stone, even clouds just to find some sort of hidden elaborate face or figure. I take moments in everyday to visually study something new.

I attended F.I.D.M. college for a short time, and grew up surrounded by artist in my family, and in friendships. A few people I look up to and consider them my idols, like my Papa Nicolas Christopulos, art professor/teacher Mr. David Wood, and a few new recent professional oil painters I have had the privilege to know.

I am very fortunate at this time to have master painters teach me skills I could never learn in a college. I believe if you want to get good at what you choose to do in your lifetime, then best to follow the talent and ask questions when you feel its most important, listen, watch, focus, and then soak up every detail you have learned, then utilize your knowledge.

The more my artwork gets noticed, the more humbling it is to me, and helps provoke my inspiration. I am truly wanting to portray a feeling of soul behind each artwork.

I just started painting with oils about 8 months ago 2009. I painted in high school with acrylics, and only tried oil once in the early 90's. Now 20 years later I am in love with oils. I can manipulate the paint texture much easier than acrylics, but I do find it easy to use almost every medium, and in the future even attempt producing some sculptures, as I also have dabbled with in the past.

Everyday I paint I learn something new as I go. Some of my first paintings are more impressionistic style. My new series of paintings in YOUTH is a bit different, with a more smooth less gritty style of brush strokes. I find painting on wood is much easier for me then canvas. I once had a friend, who is a master painter and he told me if you want your artwork to last then paint on an organic surface, so my choice is wood. He also mentioned moths eat canvas, and no real masterpiece will be remembered if bugs are eating your artwork....or something to that sort. His friendship will be missed.

I am working on a series of paintings purely for my own practice, and a form of personal therapy, an escape from the reality and conformity of everyday life. Painting gives me the feeling of bliss and security within my inner core/gut. Each artwork is like a dairy of my life, and I find a strong connection with almost every painting and drawing I create. I am particularly drawn to eyes, and the female form. Eyes are the window to your soul. I find myself connected to the darker side of art. Gothic, Outsider, and also Classic Renaissance.

I believe everyone is born with some sort of natural talent whether it's in the arts or music, poetry, sports, even the art of business careers, or even being a good mother/father to your children.... Natural talent is your calling, and if you let it just decapitate as time passes you by, then most likely you'll look back as I have, and have regrets for not starting to do something with it sooner. I am trying to erase all the regret, push forward in hopes to creating nothing but my best in the year ahead of me, someday even make gallery worthy art, as some of my fellow artist have successfully accomplished.

I appreciate all my new myspace, and deviant art friends, thank you for anyone that favors my art, and adds me to their friends. It's truly a complement.

Peace, ~Artistmind Sylvia Lizarraga
